Arrival in Lima

Happy New Year!

Madrid airport is the most badly signposted in the world, so far encountered. Spent ages trying to find our way to our connecting flight, no sign posts, noone working. In hindsight, my expectations of free champagne and a big celebrations in the Madrid airport at the strike of midnight were somewhat grandios. We found the one coffee shop that was open. It sold stale baguettes filled with one sliver of cheese for 5euros. There were no free drinks. They did however sell Baileys and beers. Hurrah.

At the strike of 12, noone really noticed. We celebrated with a packet of cadbury’s chocolate fingers. Paddy tried to get in to the spirit and wished some of the other Spaniards Happy New Year in spanish, one of them told him his translation sounded shit. Which even I thought was a bit harsh.

The onward flight to Lima was excellent. I slept for 10 of the 12 hours. First observation: Peruvians (unlike the Chinese) were really quiet on public transport.

We’ve just arrived in Lima with no troubles so far. Just awaiting the onward flight to Iquitos a bit further north and inland, a small Amazonian jungle town. We will stay there over night and head in to the  Amazon jungle for 1 week.

Not much more to add from inside the airport… Onwards!

Paddy’s observations so far: All the women look like Pochahontas.
